The Creative Play Therapy Process:
Accessing our Own Creativity & Spontaneity for
Personal Development and Use in Play Therapy
Speaker: Risë VanFleet, Ph.D., RPT-S, CDBC
Dr. Van Fleet is the Founder and President of the Family Enhancement & Play Therapy Center.
Why is play therapy widely regarded as the most developmentally appropriate form of therapy for children? Play, humor, imagination, spontaneity, and lightness help create emotional safety for children and families, permitting them to work through their problems without fear. Key research in the field of affective neuroscience also points to the importance of using the seeking and play emotional systems in the brain to offset negative affective states (Panksepp).
This multimodal workshop uses an experiential and creativity-based approach to encourage therapists to explore their own playfulness and spontaneity in the service of therapeutic efficacy, all within a light, playful environment. A variety of hands-on, interactive techniques will be discussed, demonstrated, and experienced, and participants will create new methods of their own.
This workshop is appropriate for mental health practitioners who work with children, adolescents, and families with a wide range of difficulties, and who conduct both individual and group interventions. The material and activities are beneficial for both advanced and novice play therapists.
